MALTBY GLIDER T IRON CLUBHEAD

Read the Editorial

Three years ago Ralph Maltby had an idea. Actually, he had a mission. The mission was to design a unique iron that would be the most playable, most forgiving iron ever. He was driven by an idea to design an iron that not only had the lowest actual vertical center of gravity ever, but one that had a sole design that enabled the average to higher handicap player to hit shots up in the air, even when the impact wasnt perfect.

When Ralph showed the Maltby design team the first prototype of the Glider X, eyes were raised. It was definitely different. Immediate thoughts were how we were going to sell such a radically different looking design. Ralph was not worried. He calmly said This club will sell itself. All we have to do is to get people to hit it. We did get people to hit it and once they did, they were sold. The Maltby Glider revolution was born.

In subsequent years we observed other companies in the industry come out with designs employing similar ideas, although not to the degree of the Glider X. We decided to extend the line with Maltby Glider S, a design that was not quite as extreme (shorter blade length) as the original Glider X, but still very much an Ultra Game Improvement design. The Glider S success confirmed what we believed to be true that many players simply want irons that enable them to hit better shots more often, which makes them enjoy the game more.

For 2009, the next generation of the Maltby Glider arrives! The Glider T (Transition or Trans-Design) keeps the wide sole, low cg concept in play in the harder to hit long irons, but progresses the sole width narrower in the mid irons and short irons.

The wide sole concept allows for much more mass to be placed low and rearward in the head, making these long irons the easiest to get in the air of any design on the market. A by-product of the wide sole design is that they are extremely turf friendly, allowing the player to swing the long irons confidently without the fear of the dreaded fat shot. The wide sole long irons actually perform more like hybrids, while the mid and short irons set up and play like the Ultra Game Improvement irons they truly are. The sole width progresses from a 1.7 width on the 3 iron to 1.0 on the PW and GW. The transition to narrower soles in the short irons was based on feedback from customers who wanted what the Glider concept offers in the long irons, along with a more traditional Ultra Game Improvement design in the short irons. The Glider T is also a progressive offset design, with more offset in the long irons and less in the short irons, which further enhances cg location and improves accuracy.

  • Transitional sole widths (wider in the long irons to narrower in the mid and short irons) provides optimum trajectory and distance control throughout the set
  • Short hosel design and large back cavity area allow more weight to be placed in perimeter for maximum forgiveness
  • Progressive offset design, with more in the long irons, helps square the blade at impact
  • Manufactured from 431 Stainless Steel
  • Available in RH #3 - PW, GW
  • Recommended golf ferrule - 60PI
