Removing The Old Grip
Step 1
Remove the old grip. Rubber grips can be cut off using a hook blade utility knife. Cut underneath the lip of the grip and pull back on the utility knife slicing through the grip all the way to the grip cap. (Use caution with the knife.)
Step 2
For quick removal of tape, first warm the tape with a heat gun (5 to 10 seconds). After warming the tape on a steel shaft, place the butt of the shaft against the edge of the work bench, vise or tape removal plug.
Using a tape stripper, peel the tape off the shaft by pushing the tape stripper through the length of the tape. Rotate the shaft after each strip is taken off until all tape is removed.
On a graphite shaft, after warming the tape, it is recommended to peel the tape off by hand. Tape strippers can damage graphite. After stripping and peeling most of the tape, the remaining residue can be easily removed with a towel dampened with grip solvent.
It’s important to always remove all tape and residue from the shaft before installing new grips.
Installing The New Grip
Step 3
Apply the tape lengthwise to the shaft. It should be slightly shorter than the grip length, yet still have approximately 1" extending over the butt end of the shaft. Peel off tape backing.
Step 4
Carefully wrap the tape around the shaft. Twist or squeeze the end of the tape together, as shown, and push inside the butt end of the shaft. This prevents solvent from entering the shaft during grip installation.
Step 5
Block the vent hole in the butt end of the grip with your finger (or a pointed object). Pour a generous amount of solvent inside the grip. Pinch the open end of the grip with your fingers and shake to thoroughly wet the inside of the grip.
Step 6
Pour the grip solvent out of the grip and onto the tape, covering the entire length of the two sided tape thoroughly. If necessary, pour additional solvent onto the two sided tape.
Step 7
It is very important that the butt end of the grip is completely wet with solvent, as this will make installation easier. To start the grip on the shaft, position the open end of the grip just beneath the shaft butt. Start the grip onto the shaft, from the bottom side up (see photo at left) and quickly proceed to Step 8.
Step 8
Start the grip up and over the shaft. Holding the grip as shown, slide it on until the end of the shaft stops at the top of the grip. Work quickly!
Step 9
Place the club in the playing position to properly align the grip. Align the grip square with the leading edge of the clubface. Grip alignment must take place within 2-3 minutes after installation, before the tape sets up. The grip will be dry and ready to play in 2-3 hours.
